About Us

CISSTA Kenya is a Civil Society Organization formed in 2005 but officially registered in February 2006 under Societies Act. Its operational areas are mainly in most of the informal settlements in Kenya where it works mainly with youths and women. It was formed out of dire need of reaching out to the needy. The founders came up with the idea having been born and brought up in the slums of Mathare. They sought to have a vehicle for reaching out to the poor in society, Hence ‘CISSTA’ a corrupted word for ‘sister’. This means a sisterly love to the needy. It was so compelling that it sought to reach out to others with a similar calling to partner with it.

CISSTA Kenya is a community based organization focused on educating, empowering and inspiring communities, with a particular focus on women and youth. The goal of the organization is to initiate peacebuilding and conflict resolution between and within communities living in particularly vulnerable areas in Nairobi. Upon mobilizing a significant number of community members from the target communities (Low income areas, the members are taken through a process of reflecting on their situation and plan for improvement. This process known as participatory rural appraisal (for rural communities) and participatory urban appraisal (urban communities) is a participatory methodology for enabling target communities to articulate their issues and thereby plan for improvement on the strength of information and knowledge.

Justification for founding CISSTA Kenya
Life in the Slums is characterized by lack of basic facilities like toilets, sewage systems bathrooms better housing amongst others. Garbage and refuse litters everywhere and it is a clear start of the out breaks of diseases like, cholera, typhoid dysentery etc. Water and other essential services remain a huge problem.

Conflict, rape, child labour, HIV/AIDS and STI infections are very high in the slums and that’s why most of our activities are geared to working with the locals in finding collective solutions to the local problems.

There is also luck of information because most of activities happen in the city center and the distance between most of this slums and the city center is quite long and one has to reason whether to attend the city forums or to feed his/her family.

As a result of poverty, people have been deprived of their rights and this has led to more poverty and poor living conditions. For an improved life standards and realization of the people’s participation in the development of their community, using the available local resources is needed and it is in this reason that this organization was mooted.

Organizational Structure
CISSTA Kenya is led by a Country Coordinator. It also has a working team that comprises the regional coordinators, community committee and an advisory board.

CISSTA Kenya believes in working together with the community because the wearer of the shoe knows where the shoe hurts more. It begun by working with the communities around them, by coming together and just facilitating on issues affecting the community, and then working with other organizations and communities in realizing solutions for community problems.
